The Duomo, the cathedral, anchors Ravello's central square on the tunnel side. Here's a side altar where I lit a bunch of candles for sinners of my acquaintance (you know who you are...) (and it's not the ones anyone would suspect, either!) Cathy lit hers for Barack Obama and Squeak.

My minor in college was Latin, and one of my great and unexpected pleasures as a traveler has been being able to read not only the books but also the plaques and engravings in various churches--well, two so far: Notre Dame in Paris, which was like the mother lode, and this one in Ravello. Whatever is the patron's name? Hang on...oh! Saint Pantaleone. I don't know much else about him, but he is the patron saint of the LOTTERY!!! Is this fortuitous, or what?

A satisfied if nervous customer searching for a light for her smoke.

On Sunday, the square was full of little kids running around, the older ones kicking a football and a few of the younger ones riding small bikes.

Eu Matris!
ReplyDeleteLooks like heaven - does it smell good, too? The D.N.
ReplyDeletepeggy: that's..um..porchiggese for "I the mama"?
ReplyDeletesusan: i'm told it smells wonderful. but my nose is so plugged up from office dust here in DC that it wasn't working efficiently. but after just 5 days in that wonderful, fresh air, my ongoing cough disappeared.
Hey I'm back!
ReplyDeleteWhile you were swanning around Italy and showing off by deciphering ancient Latin, I was doing the same in England.... just not quite so much ancient Latin to translate.
I'm so glad the Heathrow-Stanstead bus worked out for you, and you were able so spend so much time with Peggy. I ended up travelling on the next day, and my bus called in at Heathrow, but the timing would have been all wrong.... maybe next time!!
I haven't actually written any blog entries yet, I'm still jet-lagged like crazy!
F.
ex-shammy....you're baaaack! hooray! yeah, that jet lag stuff is unsettling. but now that i'm getting over it, i'm not waking up at 3 a.m. to work on photos any more.
ReplyDeletethe heathrow bus gig was fabulous. the central station is RIGHT IN the terminal!! many thanks for getting this info to me in time to digest it.
meanwhile, i await your photos!!!
Great photos. Looks like an amazing trip. Love, H
ReplyDeleteOh I love the photos you got! And, being a sinner extraodinaire, I appreciated the candle!
ReplyDeleteWHEN do we go again? Can't we get a place big enough for alllllll our family and friends?
I wonder if one of those "sinner candles" was for me?
ReplyDeletecathryn & ex-shammy...of course i was thinking of you, but you dint make the cut on candles this time. try sinning a little more. in the words of martin luther, "pecca fortiter!!"
ReplyDeleteI'm sinning as fast as I can.....! It's pretty tough at my advanced age.
ReplyDeleteMe too!!! I keep willing most of our government to hell.... Especially the incredibly ignorant (by standards of socrates who wrote that people who know what's right, do it) and pompous duo that testified before Congress yesterday:
ReplyDelete- David Addington who did everything except pick his nose to show his contempt for the legislative branch and the people it represents; and
- John Yoo, who felt there is no connection between authorizing torture on a typewriter in federal office and blood and deaths in faraway prisons.
These types make sin easy. At least the sin of wishing hell on other human beings.
Cathryn
Wonderful! You would have laughed at my U friend who managed our computer systems. He loved to wear a t-shirt that said something like, "Si vos can lego is vos es super erudio"*. He always knew when people had latin in their past because they would laugh. (*I used a translator to give me the latin translation of what he told me his shirt said, "if you can read this you're overeducated") Of course, it could have added .."or went to parochial schools prior to the 70's".
ReplyDeletePersonally, I referred to all the latin inscriptions everywhere as papal graffiti. I hope you had as great a time as your pictures relate.
speak(er): i've seen that shirt!! it probably wasn't on your friend, though. yes, i had a splendid time. thanks for visiting!
