1. progressive. 7. broad-minded, unprejudiced. 9. beneficent, charitable, openhanded, munificent, unstinting, lavish.
She, like many of us who share her views, abhors the transmogrification of the word liberal among the right-wing.
The label that would make me laugh were it not so sad is just plain "librul."The use of the word liberal in a negative way began in the Reagan administration. We liberals have had to endure the following labels: bleeding heart liberals, liberal/commie/pinkos and even fascists. The sneers and derisive tones of voice when saying the word by the right wing is appalling.
That confused me as well in some cases like one said she is liberal but politically speaking she's conservative like a republican. I just learned that when she said she's liberal meaning she's economically liberal not socialistic liberal. Ugh I am getting a headache with this analogy hehehehehe
ReplyDeleteHa! For me "liberal" was synonymous with "bleeding heart" and "wishy washy"--all the things I never wanted to be. Then I got older, and, lo, dem libruls was RIGHT! And I realized more and more how the Right Wing stole our language. These Righters dipped the good word "liberal" in the drool of their nihilism. They outright stole that other good word "conservative" and wrapped it around and claimed it for their hateful selves. The American press, of course, followed Right along. Ever notice how they totally avoid the correct adjectival form of Democrat which is Democratic? I remember when Bob Dole began referring to the "Democrat party" which was the first time that this corruption went mainstream--And it seemed to bounce back against Dole. Now it is normal. Chalk another victory for the hateful nihilistic lying and stupid American Right. They stole the language--they don't need to steal no more elections.

Charles, she is from the South...anything is possible. I sympathize with your headache...but you already HAVE a headache, no? Poor dear...you don't need any more. Feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteGreat minds think alike!
ReplyDeleteI've just recently written a piece in the very same thing! Here's the link:
So who and what is a 'liberal' nowadays?
cosmic: I especially love THIS PART:
ReplyDelete"this pretence took many forms - from wishful thinking to willful refusal to think - but its most common manifestation was silence. Not the stealthy conspiratorial silence of the activist, but the passive silence of prevailing attitude, implicit, assumed, unsaid. For the establishment of an orthodoxy tacit acceptance serves almost as well as fervent agreement. And I found myself tacitly accepting a progressive orthodoxy that was increasingly set against progress.
we in the US are especially good at this tacit acceptance of b.s.--witness the acceptance of Bush's coup in 2000.
Heheheh. Anyway, regarding with the picture. I'll ask Odd to send it to you since I somewhat deleted it on my email since it was full. Should I use the email that's on your comment?
